What High and Low Water Pressure Could Mean
Low water pressure in the house can be frustrating and make simple tasks take longer than they should. High water pressure might seem like a great scenario, but it can stress your pipes and fixtures, leading to damaged fixtures, leaks or even burst pipes over time. Both extremes are worth addressing, as they could point to problems that might worsen if left untreated.
High Water Pressure
Water pressure can vary for a number of reasons and even change based on where you live in the city!
We can check if you have no water pressure in your home and provide solutions if it needs to be corrected. High water pressure might seem like the perfect combination of a massage and a shower, but too-high water pressure can cause premature failure of rubber hoses, appliance solenoids, fixtures, and fittings.
As water runs through copper pipes and fittings, it slowly erodes the copper from the inside out. This process is accelerated if you have a pump, and with a recirculation line in your house, high water pressure can make the erosion worse. High water pressure can also negatively affect faucets and fixtures in your house, especially those appliances or faucets with a solenoid in them (dishwasher, clothes washing machine, humidifier, etc.). Installing something like a water hammer arrester can help with solenoid failure and keep your faucets performing their best for longer.

Low Water Pressure
Low water pressure in the shower, kitchen sink, or other parts of the home might be caused by a clog in your pipes, a leak somewhere in the system, or a malfunctioning pressure regulator.
If you’re in an older home and your plumbing hasn’t been updated, over time, your old steel water lines tend to fill up with rust and minerals on the inside. This can turn an already small line into the size of a drinking straw inside. Older houses typically did not have as many fixtures as we have now. For example, they likely had only one bathroom (not three), so water lines were built smaller in diameter because they didn’t need to move as much water.
When those smaller lines fill with mineral buildup or start to fail, it can result in no water pressure in the kitchen sink or reduced flow throughout the home. When that happens, it’s time for a re-pipe or repair. We can identify the steel lines and come up with a plan for a partial replacement or a whole-home solution to get your water pressure and flow back.

How to Know If Your Water Pressure Is Normal
Like Goldilocks, are you wondering if your water pressure is too high, too low, or just right? Most homes have a pretty wide range of water pressure, and can be anywhere between 20–100+ psi (pounds per square inch). If your faucets trickle when they should gush or your shower has no water pressure, you likely have low pressure. On the flip side, banging pipes or excessive water force could indicate high pressure. The average home water pressure should be around 60 psi and no more than 80 (80 psi is the maximum allowed by the Canadian plumbing code).
If you suspect that your water pressure might fall outside this normal range, give us a call! A simple inspection from the pros at Papa’s Plumbers can give you a quick and accurate idea of what’s going on with your water pressure at home and provide you with information and solutions to fit your budget.
